Yes to more open public spaces, community initiatives, and sustainable cities! In recent years, more and more cities have endeavored to listen to the people and opened up pedestrian-only roads and spaces. Though they’re often just offered for a few hours on the weekend, it’s a great step towards having more urban green spaces.

Car-free spaces also “promote sustainable transport, public health, and community engagement.” Walk, jog, play with your pets, hang with friends, do a sport—you can do a variety of different things outdoors, and the number of places where you can do them are growing. You don’t have to join a run club or plan an activity—you can simply walk, hang out with friends, or get some vitamin D! TOMAS MORATO, QUEZON CITY

See Tomas Morato in daylight instead of its usual neon lights by exploring the area without the issue of traffic on the first Sunday of every month, from 6-10 AM, as part of Quezon City’s “Car-Free, Carefree Tomas Morato Sundays” initiative.

ARANETA CITY, QUEZON CITY

The aRUNeta Run Club offers a community of runners who maximize the car-free Sunday mornings at the Araneta City grounds in Cubao. You don’t have to join them, though, to maximize those mornings yourself.

ROXAS BOULEVARD, MANILA

It’s officially a city ordinance for Roxas Boulevard in Manila to be car-free every Sunday, 5 to 9 AM!

GENERAL LUNA, INTRAMUROS, MANILA

Get your dose of sunlight and history at General Luna in Intramuros—on foot! The area in the Walled City is car-free every Sunday, letting pedestrians enjoy what the city has to offer.

AYALA AVENUE, MAKATI

No traffic in Ayala Avenue sounds like a dream, and it’s come true in the form of car-free Sundays at the stretch of road from 6-10 AM! You’re free to hang out, walk around, and do some recreational activities, all without vehicles and honks and exhaust fumes.

GIL FERNANDO AVE., MARIKINA

Bring those bikes, running shoes, or speakers and get to Gil Fernando Ave. in Marikina, whose roads are closed to vehicles every Sunday, 6 to 10 AM. It also doesn’t hurt to be one with the community and participate in numerous initiatives like Zumba dancing.

GREENFIELD DISTRICT, MANDALUYONG

Bike, walk your pets, run, or get an active day started at the car-free Greenfield District in Mandaluyong every 6-10 AM on Sundays.

FILINVEST CITY, MUNTINLUPA

Filinvest City’s car-free spaces grow in number so often, offering sizable spaces for recreational activities, chill hangs, and general grass touching every Sunday morning.

TAGUIG

Fifth Avenue in BGC is also a great way to spend a weekend since it’s closed to traffic. From shopping to jogging, you can spend 11 AM to 9 PM on Saturdays and Sundays in a multitude of ways. Sign us up!

Also in Taguig, two roads, Cayetano Boulevard and C-5 Service Road to Ecopark, will be “transformed into community spaces” and be car-free from 5 AM to 9 AM every Sunday.

PEOPLE’S STREETS, PASIG

Pasig City’s adding more and more streets to their People’s Street project! The car-free initiative includes Emerald Avenue, East Bank Road, Caruncho Avenue, Kapasigan Boulevard, MH Del Pilar, Lopez Jaena Street, Oranbo Drive, Kamagong Street in their list of roads closed off to vehicles every Sunday from 6 AM onwards.
